While some didn’t do much for me, I do have a few that are within my top series picks so I do have a pretty hefty set of standards when it comes to faerie novels. This was one of the first series I read in an eBook format–and truth be told I wanted to read this series so bad that I started to read eBooks just so I could read it! Norbert Elias suggested that ‘civilization’ involves the transformation of human habitus so that violence of all sorts is gradually subjected to greater and more sophisticated forms of management and control, whereas ‘decivilization’ encompasses processes which produce an increase in violence and a breakdown in the stability and consistency of on-going social relations. Engaging, wide-reaching and authorative, this is essential reading for students, academics and researchers in sociology, criminology, social pyschology and cultural studies. Interdisciplinary in its approach, the text draws on evidence from sociology, criminology, primate studies and archaeology to shed light on arguments about the social construction and innate nature of violence. It provides readers with a succinct and comprehensive overview of its nature and effects, and the solutions and conflict resolutions involved in responses to violence. ![]() ![]() Introducing the major theoretical debates, the book examines different levels of violence - interpersonal, institutional and collective - and different forms of violence - such as racist crime, homophobic crime and genocide. ![]() He examines violent behaviour and its meanings in contemporary culture and throughout history. Those she is hunting will have nowhere to run when her shadow falls across them. I could go on but it’s fair to say it’s further technical and recording problems were noticeable throughout! I’m trying to download one more book to give it one last chance and if it’s not 3 or more stars I’m going back to paperbacks. Driven by love for her lost husband and by fear for the five-year-old son she has sent into hiding, Jane Hawk has become an unstoppable predator. ![]() WIFI warnings were aplenty despite the icon always being visible. Couple this with odd pronunciation and you find yourself at times going backwards to try and understand what was said, for example the fire arm pronunciation “Heckler & Koch” is pronounced “Heckler and Coke”! Of course I realise this is probably my personal preference but I have never heard it pronounced as such anywhere else! But if this wasn’t bad enough the chapter numbers were at odds with the narration making tracking your place a nightmare. Great story from Mr Koontz virtually ruined by the clipped narration, for example I was 3 chapters in before I realised the main characters name was “Jane” and not “Ane”! This clipped narration continues throughout the story. ![]() ![]() ![]() At the end of the day, however, Emezi is interested in their books facilitating relevant conversations. This tends to position their works as a template on how things should be, rather than a reflection of the current times or sometimes, a guide on how things can be. Their work centers queer characters in disruptive and other times, normalized forms, without fanfare or difficult character arcs. Alongside publishing seven books, across literary fiction, young adult fiction, poetry, and now romance, they serve as an executive producer for the onscreen adaption of their debut novel Freshwater. ![]() So I was like, okay, you know, to be fair, this is, what real life is.”Īs one of Nigeria’s leading queer authors, Emezi’s works span several genres and artistic disciplines. “I wasn't really planning for the theme of grief and death to be so present in the book, but it's what the characters wanted. “It was meant to be more fluffy than it ended up,” Emezi says over Zoom. You Made A Fool Of Death With Your Beauty turned out to be a subversive romance novel that also demanded some level of depth of its own. ![]() ![]() ![]() Both the Order and the Rebellion want her for their side as war between the factions looms.
